Calendar Highlights Oct. 2 – October 9: SXSW Eco, Wilderness School, Bat Cruise, Cooking Classes…

[Conference] SXSW Eco starts in a few days! The conference runs Monday –Wednesday but if you go check in on Sunday and get your badge you can join us for the Warm-Up party in Brush Square 6-8pm (open bar and LPs spinnin' on a turntable.)

In case you haven't started looking through the jam-packed SXSW Eco schedule yet, we will warn you, this year's conference is filled with loads of amazing presentations with incredible speakers, including:

  • "Peak Travel:" Envisioning the Post-Air Travel Age
  • Recycling More Vs. Recycling Right in America 
  • Building Bipartisan Consensus in the Green War
  • City Transit 411: Urban Myths and Urban Mobility 
  • Tackling the Renewable Energy-Water Nexus 
  • And Austin's own bug connoisseur and founder of Little Herds, Robert Nathan Allen will be leading a session called Entomophagy 101: Why We Want You to Eat Bugs.

Looking to get more involved? You can help SXSW Eco in its waste diversion efforts by volunteering with SpinFish Event Solutions on Tuesday, October 7th and Wednesday, October 8th. SpinFish will be collecting lots of items from the conference, including banners, pallets, and paper, and will be giving them away for reuse so that they do not end up in the landfill. If you want to help hand things out or are interested in picking some things up to reuse yourself, send an email to renee@spinfishinc.com.


[Wilderness Program]Saturday, October 4th at9:30am Earth Native Wilderness School will be hosting its monthlyhomeschool wilderness program for children ages 6 to 13 at McKinney Falls State Park. Curriculum topics include local edible, medicinal, and useful plants, natural navigation, wildlife ecology and animal tracking, sensory awareness exercises, and basic wilderness survival skills. More info>>
 


The NWF's Marya Fowler will be speaking at the First Unitarian Universalist Church on Sunday.[Forum] Sunday, October 5th from noon to 1pm, theFirst Unitarian Universalist Church Green Sanctuary Committee is hosting a public forum entitled, "How Academic Performance Can be Improved by Connecting Kids to Nature."National Wildlife Federation's Marya Fowler will explain how and why schoolyard habitats and outdoor classrooms help students learn. More info>> 
 


A special SXSW Eco edition of Hot Science Cool Talks will be held on Monday evening.

[Science Talk] Monday, October 6th from 5:45pm to 8:15pm UT's Environmental Science Institute is teaming up with SXSW Eco for a special edition of Hot Science Cool Talks. The theme of the talk is, "Extreme Weather & Uncertainty in Forecasting," and Kevin Kloesel of the Oklahoma Climatological Survey will speak about his work right in the heart of tornado alley. The event is free and open to the public and includes a slew of weather-related activities and hands-on science experimentsMore info>>
 


The Earth Native Wilderness School will be hosting a picnic in the park for preschoolers this Tuesday.[Youth Education]Tuesday, October 7th at10am Earth Native Wilderness School is hosting,"Picnic in the Park: A Day in Nature for Preschoolers," at theBarton Creek Habitat Preserve. The class runs for seven weeks and includes nature-inspired crafts and outdoor exploring. More info>>
 

 


[Cooking Class] Tuesday, October 7th from 6:30 to 8:30pm the Sustainable Food Center will be hosting aKitchen Fundamentals class all about vegetables.  In this class you will learn to unlock the flavors and nutrients of roots, shoots, tubers and flowers using seasonal andlocally grown producefrom the SFC Farmers’ Market and some tried and true cooking techniques that will make your veggies the stars of your plate. The Interfaith Environmental Network is hosting a solar symposium.[Symposium] Tuesday, October 7th

from 7 to 8:30pm, is the Interfaith Environmental Network's Fall symposium,"It's Time for Your Congregation to go Solar!" Representatives from Austin Energy, Meridian Solar, Lighthouse Solar, and Texas Solar Power will there at at St. David's Episcopal Church to help guide you and your congregation through the process of converting to renewable energy. More info>>
 

The Austin Sierra Club is hosting a meetup on the LoneStar Riverboat Cruise.[Social] Thursday, October 9th from 

6pm to 8:30pm the Austin Sierra Club is hosting a meetup on the electric-powered Lonestar Riverboat to see the Congress Avenue bats. The cost is $25 if you register by October 7th and $30 at the dock. More info>>
