Important CodeNEXT Vote

“Next Thursday, Nov. 6th the City Council is voting on the new land development code (aka CodeNEXT) approach for the consultant team to take in the revision process for the next few months until the new council has an opportunity to review the direction. Three approaches have been proposed: Approach 1, 2, and 3 or low, medium, and high. The consultant team has recommended Approach 2. ASLA Austin has taken the lead in advocating for the inclusion of policies supporting Nature in the City. We are supporting Approach 2 with a high content rewrite to include significant emphasis on Green Infrastructure and Sustainable Water Management – two of the eight Imagine Austin Comprehensive plan priorities. These priorities were not included in our previous comprehensive plan, so a greater focus is needed to bring them to the forefront of the new code.

Please do at least one of the following or both:

1. Email your council members in support of including Green Infrastructure and Sustainable Water Management with high importance in the newcode.

2. Sign up to speak at the city council hearing. Due to construction in the council chambers the hearing will be held at the Travis County Commissioners Court, 700 Lavaca. The Item is #52 on the agenda. You can sign up to speak at any time before the item comes forward. The best way to monitor the council proceedings is to turn on Channel 6 and watch for the numbers of the items as they come up. Our understanding is that the council meeting will be shorter today because they will need to vacate the court room by 5:30 p.m.

If you would like to find out more about CodeNEXT and ASLA Austin’s position, please go to the CodeNEXT website and look under Viewpointsfor our position papers, recommendations, and power point presentations.”
