SXSW – Green Film Events

If the bizarre snowfall on Tuesday has left you a bit confused and disoriented, let me remind you that it is in fact almost March here in Austin, TX… and that means that South By Southwest is just around the corner. Hopefully most of you are not the type to flee Austin during the insanity the festival brings… and if you are, maybe this will convince you to stay. At least for the first weekend.

I’m very excited to announce that Greenlit, a documentary out of Hollywood on greening the film industry, is premiering here at SXSW. As described on Ambush Entertainment’s website, “Greenlit … follows the production of The River Why, starring Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights) as it attempts to keep an environmentally friendly set thanks to the supervision of a "green" consultant.” This consultant is Lauren Selman of Los Angeles’ Reel Green Media, who founded the company to educate the entertainment community about sustainability. As one of the key players within the emerging green film industry, Reel Green Media will be the focus of a later blog. But now you can get an inside look at their efforts through Greenlit. Anyone can attend SXSW film screenings, even if you don’t have a badge. You can either purchase individual tickets at the theater, or buy a film pass for $70, also at the theater, which gives you priority entrance to all screenings over individual ticket holders.

In addition to the screening, there will also be an official workshop on Sustainable Filmmaking to teach filmmakers how to reduce their carbon footprint and save money in the process. Miranda Bailey, producer and director of Greenlit, will be one of the presenters, along with Larry Engel, Associate Professor at American University School of Communication. Mr. Engel is an accomplished producer, director, screenwriter and cinematographer; but most important to this topic, he was co-author of The Code of Best Practices in Sustainable Filmmaking – one of the guides I highlighted in my last post. With his expertise and Miranda Bailey’s experience, this will surely be a very informative event. Unfortunately it is only open to badge holders, so for those that can’t attend, look out for my post after the workshop.

I hope many of you come out to support the film!
