From the Shoal Creek Conservancy

You are cordially invited to the Wood Street Settlement at Shoal Creek Undertold Historical Marker Ceremony on Friday, February 23 at 9 a.m. at 600 Wood Street, Austin 78703.

The Wood Street Settlement, located on the Western bank of Shoal Creek, was once home to a distinct enclave of African American and later Mexican American residents. As the frontier City’s natural western boundary, Shoal Creek became a settling point for formerly enslaved people following the Civil War. Although many of the physical reminders of this era in Austin’s history have disappeared, residents of Wood Street at Shoal Creek were major contributors to the rich and diverse ethical historical geography of Austin.

Please join us to honor this undertold history along Shoal Creek with a ceremony to unveil a Texas Historical Commission Undertold Historical Marker at the site and with comments by State Representative Gina Hinojosa, Texas Historical Commission Commissioner Wallace Jefferson, and Travis County Historical Commission Commissioner Joe Ramirez. This event is co-hosted by Shoal Creek Conservancy’s Historic Bridges Committee and Shoal Creek Ambassadors, the City of Austin Parks & Recreation Department, the Texas Historical Commission and the Travis County Historical Commission.

Coffee and a light breakfast will be provided. This is an outdoor event. Please dress comfortably. Metered parking is available along Wood Street and West 6th Street.

Please RSVP to development@shoalcreekconservancy.org. We welcome you extending this invitation to friends, family and colleagues.
