What to do about MoPac South?

MoPac South Open House

What's Inside...

After Austinites raised big concerns earlier this year over a proposal to expand MoPac South by building a double-decker bridge over Lady Bird Lake, the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA) is back with some new options. The alternatives however, might not be all that better. The new options are available for public viewing via avirtual open house, but all of them include adding at least one toll lane with prices that vary based on the level of traffic.

As the Austin Monitor reports, several of Austin’s local elected officials expressed their displeasure with the mobility authority’s plans at a public forum on Monday. Austin City Council Member Kathie Tovo (District 9) said that she is worried about water pollution, traffic congestion, and the general threat that a major expansion poses to Austin’s cherished public places.

Travis County Commissioner Brigid Shea also spoke out at the meeting, putting forth many alternative proposals to the mobility authority’s projects, including the addition of HOV lanes on South MoPac.

The public has until November 20th to submit their own comments to the mobility authority.
