Your Green Week Ahead: Climate Change Talk and a Solar Happy Hour

Featured Event: The Austin EcoNetwork invites you to learn more about climate change policy and action right in your own backyard with, “The Paris Climate Agreement, An Austin Perspective.” This free event is being cohosted by the Austin EcoNetwork and the Rainforest Partnership and will be held on Wednesday, February 24th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at the Google Fiber Space downtown.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler will kick off the event with his take on Austin’s role in the global fight against climate change, including why he decided to participate in the historic Paris climate conference held last year. After that, we’ll dive into a panel discussion with other community leaders who were on the ground in Paris, giving you a behind the scenes look at this major turning point in climate change policy.

[Gardening Class] Saturday, February 20th from 10am to noon the Sunfield Community Garden is hosting a free Rainwater Harvesting Class. Students will learn the best strategies for rainwater harvesting and water conservation from Sunfield’s Garden Manager Dani Slabaugh, a sustainable water use expert who has been designing and installing highly effective rainwater harvesting solutions in Central Texas for years. There will also be plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning as attendees help to install a 500 gallon rain tank. More info>>

[Gardening Class] Saturday, February 20th at noon Brite Ideas is hosting a free Algae Class at its store on South Congress Avenue. Students will learn all about the nutritional benefits of algae, as well as how to successfully grow it. Recipes for healthy algae-based snacks will also be shared. More info>>

[Volunteer] Sunday, February 21st from 10am to noon Austin Youth River Watch is hosting a volunteer work day at McKinney Falls State Park. Volunteers are needed to help plant deep-rooted native grasses to rebuild the banks of Onion Creek. Tools will be provided. More info>>

[Happy Hour] Tuesday, February 23rd from 5:30pm to 8pm Solar Austin is hosting a Happy Hour at Scholz Garten. The topic of discussion will be the Pedernales Electric Co-op and its recent kickoff of on an on-bill financing program for customer-owned solar installations and battery storage. Blake Beavers, renewable and distributed energy manager at Pedernales Electric Co-op, will be speaking. More info>>

[Crafting Workshop] Tuesday, February 23rd from 6pm to 8:30pm Austin Creative Reuse is hosting a crafting workshop at the Creative Reuse Center in the Linc Shopping Center. Tools and materials will be made available for volunteers wanting to help create merchandising examples for the store. Assembling Teacher Kits from reuse materials and signage is also on the agenda. [Zero Waste Meeting ] Tuesday, February 23rd from 7pm to 8:30pm the Austin Zero Waste Alliance is hosting its monthly meeting at Recycled Reads on Burnet Road. The guest speaker will be Edwin Marty, food policy manager for the City of Austin. An experienced urban farmer, Edwin brings years of experience and a passionate commitment to building better local food systems. He’ll be speaking about his efforts here in Austin and ways for you to get involved. More info>>
