Emma’s First Bus Ride: An Adventure in Public Transportation

Meet Emma. Emma is an AEN intern and a native Austinite, and until earlier this week, she had never been on a CapMetro bus. So, on Tuesday I took her along on a little public transportation field trip, teaching her how to take advantage of the public transportation resources right here in Austin.

Why did I show up at her house at 6 in the morning and force her to take the bus? Because as much as everyone complains about Austin's transportation system, many of the city's existing bus lines are seriously underutilized. And, if Austin wants to meet its ambitious carbon reduction goals, it needs to get people out of their cars and onto public transportation.

And yes, it's true that Austin's public transportation infrastructure needs to improve, but in the meantime, there is something that a lot of us can do right now – simply give the bus a try. A significant impact could be made if those of use who are lucky enough to live near a bus line actually starting using it. So, if you have a friend who is a total bus newbie, do what I did; take them by the hand, and walk them to the nearest CapMetro bus stop.

Look like fun? That's because it was, and you can join in on the fun by having a public transportation field trip of your very own. Just grab a friend and give it a try!

First time bus riding tips:

  • Find a friend who knows what they're doing and bring them along to show you the ropes.
  • Download the RideScout and CapMetro apps. Together, they can help you chart your course and pay for your ticket all at once.
  • Don't be afraid to make mistakes! It's okay if you get on the wrong bus at first. You'll get the hang of it before long.
  • Ask the bus driver or your fellow passengers for help. Most people are willing to guide you along.
  • Stop waiting and just do it! There is no day like today!
