From the Sierra Club –

Each book club meeting has been well attended and there are always engaging, thought-provoking conversations at them. If the ocean’s health is something you’re interested in, you should check out this book.

We’ll be discussing the book “The World is Blue: How Our Fate and the Ocean’s are One” by Sylvia Earle.

A reviewer on Amazon.com summed it up well:
“Sylvia Earle is the Jacques Cousteau of this generation, and more. Not only is she a wonderful spokeswoman for the sea, it has been her career to study and protect it for many years. The World is Blue is a plea for help for the ocean from one of its biggest and most knowledgeable supporters. She’ll tell you why the oceans are in danger, and the few small things you need to do to help protect them. All of this is presented in interesting, lively language that’s easy to read; never does it get dry or preachy. It feels like she’s writing a biography about an old friend. I would recommend this book for everyone, but I think the most important and the most interested would be those who love the ocean and work with the ocean.” Another reviewer liked the hopeful tone the author used when speaking on these topics, that they had not seen in other books.

People present at the book club meetings contribute to suggestions as to what books we read. The book for August is “Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World” by Bill Nye. This is a very uplifting/hopeful book when it comes to books on climate change and I look forward to reading it.

The book club will meet at the “Rock Garden” picnic tables. These are located uphill from the Zilker Hillside Theater.
