Talk: It’s All Rain, but Drought Is Too Slow and Flood Is Too Fast

John Nielsen-Gammon, State Climatologist, and award winning Director of the Texas Center for Climate Studies, and professor of weather forecasting and climatology teaches weather forecasting and climatology. at Texas A&M University will talk to us about some of the latest science involving climate change effects on droughts and floods in Texas. Current drought issues involve how to measure drought and what its ultimate impacts on humans and ecosystems will be. Is it possible to be in a permanent drought? Regarding heavy rainfall, the science is much clearer, but it becomes ambiguous when scientists consider climate change’s impact on individual extreme events such as Hurricane Harvey. Usually, the impacts are evaluated with respect to a storm “like” the one that actually happened, but there’s lots of freedom to choose what counts as “like”, and the answer depends on the choice.

After Professor Nielsen-Gaimmon’s talk, we will divide into action teams and fight the climate crisis together. Please come learn and work with us.
