Climate Change Committee Meets Monday, May 4 at 6:30 – 8:00 PM via Zoom with Bruce Melton Speaking on Climate Tipping Points

Is it already too late to save the planet? What does science have to say about the need for greenhouse gas reductions of 100% by 2030? Are we past some tipping points and how fast and how bad will tipping be? Much about tipping points is not known with certainty, but what does science know? Is there anything we can do about it? Come and explore answers to these and more.

Bruce Melton will present: “Tipping Points Are Active – Fundamentals of the Climate Emergency.” “Irreversible” tipping points are now active after 30 years of delay in controlling warming. Melton will talk about recent research identifying that more than half of known tipping points have now been activated, how the irreversible can be reversed, time frames, and implications for unrecoverable impacts with failure. The focus this session will be on ongoing: permafrost collapse, Antarctica and Greenland collapse, shutdown of the Gulf Stream, collapse of high altitude, high latitude, and tropical forests, and barrier Island collapse.

The Austin Sierra Club Climate Change Committee will meet via Zoom at our regularly scheduled time, 6:30 PM, on May 4. Everyone is welcome, not just those on the Committee. You must join from your computer or smartphone. The Zoom access is via this linkhttps://zoom.us/j/5133069449 or click “Join a Meeting” and then enter the code 5133069449.

On a smartphone, go to your apps store and install the Zoom app. On a computer, it will download a small hidden app for you. Millions have used Zoom without trouble.

After Bruce speaks, we will tell you about several ways we’re still fighting for the climate. We’ll also get input from attendees on how important electing climate candidates is for you and ways we might get involved.

If you have any questions, you may email me, Bob Hendricks, at AustinSierraClub@gmail.com or call me at 512-451-5985.

This time you have to bring your own snacks.
