More about your guide, Collin Michaels:

Collin spent most of his childhood in New Orleans, LA and Houston, TX where he fell in love with nature at an early age on the Gulf coast. He graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT with a Bachelor’s in 2009 and a Master’s in 2010 in biology with a focus on plant-insect interactions. Collin moved to Austin in 2017, and he now spends most of his time either hiking in the hill country or trying to keep his dog Jake from eating mulch under the pretense of gardening. Other than plants, Collin is an avid science fiction fan and keeps aquaria in his spare time.

At TreeFolks, Collin helped launch the pilot year of the Remove and Replace program for low-income homeowners in the Austin area in 2018. Since then he has been working closely with city, county, and non-profit partners on several carbon sequestration projects both within and outside of Austin’s city limits. Collin also heads the Education program at TreeFolks where he runs the Urban Forest Steward course, leads Tree ID Walks, and puts on several workshop series throughout the year. Finally, Collin writes the Bug of the Month and Tree of the Month columns for TreeFolks’ bimonthly newsletter Looking Up!
