JOB: TCE Austin Environmental Program Staff

Strategically-minded activist wanted for position available with Texas Campaign for the Environment (TCE) and TCE Fund, the state’s leading canvass-based environmental group. TCE’s mission is to empower Texans to fight pollution through sustained grassroots organizing campaigns that shift corporate and governmental environmental policy. TCE has been the lead organization in Texas promoting producer takeback recycling, Zero Waste, greener electronics and holding the waste industry accountable through corporate and legislative campaigns. There is a strong preference for someone with field and/or phone canvass experience. Good speaking, listening and writing skills a must.

The best tools TCE has to achieve its mission are the field and phone canvass operations. The Austin Program Staffer must educate and motivate the canvass staff and management and involve them in TCE’s campaigns including briefing staff, developing materials for their organizing work.
 
This person will work with the Executive Director and other TCE staff, develop organizational corporate and legislative strategies, including evaluating and researching specific issues TCE works on at the local, state and federal levels and translating goals into winnable campaigns that motivate canvassers and the public. Experience in planning and executing creative direct actions is important.
 
TCE needs a good strategic thinker who learns quickly who can work well with diverse stakeholders. This person will lead efforts to translate the success of the canvass operations into effective campaigns that get results by convincing government and corporate decision-makers to take the positions and actions TCE advances. A candidate must be able to identify, recruit and work with a broad spectrum of allies that share TCE’s interests, including local community activists and activist organizations, businesspeople, elected officials and their staff members, and other government officials.
 
In order to pressure government officials and corporations, TCE must put a public spotlight on the issues we work on and the decision-makers we seek to influence. The program staff must design and implement media strategies that improve TCE’s visibility and credibility, and create public pressure on our targets. The Program Staff must have strong communication skills and be able to effectively give motivating presentations and build relationships with the media.
 
Responsibilities will also include developing social media strategies to involve supporters and advance TCE’s campaigns.
 
Program staff assists in development activities by building relationships with individual donors, assisting in writing online and direct mail efforts and identifying partnerships in which TCE can provide organizing support for projects.
Part of Program Staff time is spent on research and public education projects for TCE Fund. Staff assists in cultivating relationships with TCE Fund donors, developing proposals for foundations and coordinating TCE Fund’s workplace giving efforts through Earth Share of Texas. Program staff is also expected to occasionally canvass with the staff.
 
Salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include medical insurance, paid sick days, holidays and vacation. Some weekend and evening work is expected.
