Mobility Bond Updates

Smart Corridors

What's Inside...

Austin Mayor Steve Adler continues to advocate for his Mobility Bond proposal. Last month, the mayor first announced his $720 million bond proposal at a meeting of the Austin Chamber of Commerce, calling for the funding of smart corridors along North and South Lamar, Airport Boulevard, Guadalupe, Riverside, Burnet, MLK East/FM 969.

In the time since his initial announcement, Mayor Adler has continued to release additional details about his plan.

Here are some updates:

  • The Austin Transportation Department estimates that the city has $9.5 billion in mobility needs. The mayor’s proposal obviously will not cover all of this, but he says it’s a step in the right direction.
  • Estimates show that turning North Lamar into a smart corridor will reduce morning and evening rush hour intersection delays by 48 percent and 49 percent, respectively.
  • Part of the mayor’s plan is to try and mitigate gentrification along these new smart corridors by reinvesting additional tax revenue from increased density to pay for permanently affordable housing in mixed-income settings.

It is now up to City Council to decide whether or not to place the mayor’s bond proposal on the ballot in November. A decision on what that bond package should look like needs to be made this summer. More info>>
