A recent independent study found that more recyclables are going to the landfill than are being placed in residents’ blue carts. In fact, 44 percent of what is found in Austin’s residential trash stream could be recycled.

To turn this around, the City wants to learn more about the barriers between residents and their blue recycling carts. For that reason, Austin Resource Recovery is asking for “insights” from the community. Unlike “ideas” which are suggestions for solving a problem, “insights” reveal the root of the problem and this more detailed information will help ARR understand the obstacles which will allow for more and better opportunities for recycling.

Until Aug. 24, Austinites can share their insights about recycling through an online survey, text messages and community meetings. Residents are encouraged to go to insights.austintexas.gov or text 512-580-7778 to answer this question,

More than half of all household recyclables get thrown away in landfills.

How might we put fewer recyclables in the trash?

City staff also will talk with residents where they work, shop and play during Speak Week, scheduled for mid-August. We will report back with what we’ve learned and what actions the City plans to take. This month-long effort is designed to help identify what we can all do, as a community, to increase household recycling. This important data will help us effectively target new outreach efforts and city services to where they’re needed most.
