Your Green Week Ahead: PorterPalooza, Cowspiracy, & A Climate Change Talk

[Film Screening] Saturday, November 21st from 11am to 1:30pm the documentary,“Cowspiracy,” will be screened at the Austin History Center. “Cowspiracy” uncovers the many negative environmental consequences of the meat industry and investigates why nobody seems to be talking about them. [Gardening Class] Saturday, November 21st at noon Brite Ideas Aquaponics is hosting a free class on rainwater collection at its store on South Congress Avenue. Students will learn why rainwater is an increasingly valuable resource, as well as how to retain water in attractive, low-maintenance gardens. More info>>

[Climate Change Talk] Sunday, November 22nd from noon to 1pm the First Unitarian Universalist Church is hosting a public forum on climate change, featuring University of Texas Professor Jay Banner. The discussion will focus around the future effects of climate change on Texas, including drought and rising temperatures. Banner is the Director of the Environmental Science Institute at UT Austin. PorterPalooza is on Sunday. [Celebration] Sunday, November 22nd from 5pm to 7:30pm is PorterPalooza, a celebration of Austin’s Godfather of Zero Waste, J.D. Porter. The party will be held at Esquina Tango and include beer, food, and great company. Plus, all proceeds benefit the Central Texas Zero Waste Alliance. More info>>

About J.D. Porter – Porter is one of the earliest executive directors of Ecology Action of Texas, a pioneer in using recycling for economic development, a key leader in the fight against a trash incinerator planned for East Austin in the 1980s, an early leader in the Green Party of Texas, the longest-serving member of the city’s Solid Waste/Zero Waste Advisory Commission, and the founder of the Central Texas Zero Waste Alliance (CTZWA). Now, he is moving to Alabama to settle down with his fiancee, and the environmental community is giving him a send-off party to celebrate all of his hard work over the years.

[Awards Dinner] Monday, November 23rd at 6pm the Save Barton Creek Association is hosting its Annual Awards Dinner at the Zilker Clubhouse. They’ll be celebrating yet another year of protecting Barton Creek, Barton Springs, and the Edwards Aquifer and want to share the evening with you! The celebration will include live music, beer, and a Thanksgiving buffet from the Salt Lick. More info>>
