The Alley Flat Initiative is hosting a housewarming party on Friday.[Housing Tour] Friday, November 13th from 5:30pm to 7pm the Alley Flat Initiative is hosting a tour and housewarming celebration of their fourth completed alley flat project on Merrie Lynn Avenue. The Alley Flat Initiative is a collaborative effort between the University of Texas and several nonprofits to develop innovative solutions for Austin’s affordable housing crisis. An Alley Flat is a small, detached residential unit, known as an ADU or Accessory Dwelling Unit, which meets certain affordability and green building standards. More info>>


[Leadership Training] Saturday, November 14th from 9am to 1pm the Sustainable Food Center is hosting a “Community Garden Leadership Training” class at its headquarters on East 17th Street. Students will learn how to contribute to the vitality of the their neighborhoods by starting community gardens of their very own. The workshop will cover a wide range of topics, including community organizing, fundraising, community outreach, and how to secure a plot of land.Tickets are $5. More info>>


[Solar Tour] Saturday, November 14th from 9am to 1pm is the Bastrop Solar Tour. This is your chance to view four unique homes, whose owners have all made the choice to go solar. As this community rebuilds after the devastating fires of 2011, homeowners are looking to energy efficient practices and pulling power from the sun. The tour is free and self-guided, but will begin at Stanberry & Associates with presentations from Solar Austin and the Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative, as well as breakfast tacos and coffee. More info>>

There will be a public meeting at Emma Long Park on Saturday.

[Public Forum] Saturday, November 14th from 10am to 1pm the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a public meeting at Emma Long Metropolitan Park(rescheduled from Nov. 7th). The city is in the early stages of creating a Vision Plan for the 77 acre day-use area of the park and is looking to gather feedback from the public on what amenities and features they’d like to see in the future. More info>>

Brite Ideas is hosting a free class on Saturday.

[Gardening Class]Saturday, November 14th at noon Brite Ideas Aquaponics is hosting a free class at its store on South Congress Avenue. Students will learn how to take advantage of electrical and electromagnetic effects and shield themselves from more problematic forms of radiation and electromagnetic fields. More info>>

There will be a vegan potluck at Pease Park on Saturday.[Potluck] Saturday, November 14th from 1pm to 4pm is Austin’s Largest Vegan Potluck Picnic at Pease Park. [Naturalists Meeting] Tuesday, November 17th from 6:30pm to 9pm the Native Plant Society of Texas – Austin Chapter is hosting a talk on biodiversity at the Tarrytown United Methodist Church. Cullen Hanks, a Texas Nature Tracker Biologist for Texas Parks and Wildlife, will be giving a talk entitled, “Biodiversity in Texas: Connecting the Past, Present, and Future.” The presentation will profile different species of birds, plants, and reptiles, exploring perspectives from the past and present. More info>>

The Young Sierrans are hosting a City Hall Field Trip next Thursday.[Field Trip] Thursday, November 19th at 6pm the Young Sierrans are hosting a City Hall Field Trip to teach millennials how to get more involved with local politics. The evening will begin at The Ginger Man for a drink or two and a short primer on the basics of local government. After that, everyone will head over to City Hall to listen in on a real live City Council meeting. This event is a great opportunity for 20 and 30 somethings in Austin to get more involved with local government, in a casual and fun way.
